Churches in the United States are on the brink of a pastoral crisis. According to a 2023 Barna Research study,

three-quarters of pastors surveyed say they at least somewhat agree with the statement “It is becoming harder to find mature young Christians who want to be pastors,” and 71 percent at least somewhat agree with the statement “I am concerned about the quality of future Christian leaders.”

As the average age of clergy creeps up, pastors in the U.S. will soon be faced with the great challenge of finding their successor. Imagine how many churches could close their doors in the next 10-15 years if they cannot find new leaders. Fear is a natural response – but what if fear could be transformed into hope and excitement? What might God be stirring up in the Church?

We may be entering a new and exciting season for churches in the U.S. where young leaders will be raised up to courageously carve a new path. If you are a young preacher or aspiring pastor, here are five habits to cultivate as you prepare for pastoral leadership. And if you are not a young preacher or aspiring pastor, consider sending this article with someone who is, and ask God – “What is my role in pouring into the next generation of leadership?”

  1. Get in the Word

Like Isaiah 55:11 says, God’s Word will not return empty. Saturate yourself in Scripture, and allow it to transform your heart and mind.

  1. Be Humble

Young leader – you may be the future, but you still have much to learn! Take the posture of Christ, who humbled himself (Ephesians 2:8) to listen and serve others.

  1. Take Opportunities to Develop

Invest in yourself with experiences that sharpen your preaching and leading skills. Participating in an event like the upcoming Academy of Preachers Day of Preaching 2026 is an excellent way to connect with peers and receive feedback from seasoned preachers.

  1. Find a Mentor

The current generation of pastors possess a wealth of knowledge and wisdom – consider reaching out to an older pastor in your life. Sit down with them, listen to their stories, and ask curious questions about their journey!

  1. Do Not Fear

Major shifts can create anxiety, fear, and pressure to perform. However, you must remember to not lead out of fear, but love (2 Timothy 1:7). There is much to be afraid of, yes, but there is much to be hopeful for.

We may be on the edge of a crisis, or we could be at the beginning of an exciting journey where resilient young leaders rise to serve the Church.
